Recently, Trademark Office of the State Administration of Industry and Commerce, China Trademark Association issued the List of “Top One Hundred Counties of the National Trademark Development” and Yiwu ranked the second place for the second year around the whole country and the first among all cities or counties of Zhejiang Province.
It is learned that cities or counties ranking in the List of “Top One Hundred Counties of the National Trademark Development” are determined on the basis of the number of registered trademarks, national well-known trademarks (administration determined) and provincial famous trademarks that are possessed by these cities or counties, with 1 point for one registered trade mark, 100 points for one provincial famous trademark and 300 points for one national well-known trademarks. All points are added up to decide the final ranks. Yiwu comes only next to Jinjiang of Fujian Province among all county-level cities with 19,274 registered trade marks, 6 administration-determined national well-known trademarks, 68 provincial famous trademarks and 27,874 points.
"Though we list on the second place, we should be aware that there is a big gap between Yiwu and the Champion. Jinjiang, Fujian Province has totally 48,288 points and more common trade marks, national well-known trademarks and provincial famous trademarks than that of Yiwu." A leader from Industrial and Commercial Bureau said the points of the third and the fourth places are 23,750 and 23,743 respectively, so in the list Yiwu has competitors "both ahead and behind".
In Yiwu some well known trade marks have become "not known" at all. It is reported that for the last few years, Yiwu enterprises' judicially recognized trade marks has grown by "blowing out". By 2007 there were only 36 pieces, but now the number has reached 70 not including those judicially recognized but not recorded by the commercial and industrial departments. Some of the Well-known trademarks are not well-known even in Yiwu and the recognizing courts are from undeveloped areas.
The latest data show that so far Yiwu has 23,905 registered trademarks in total including 6 administratively recognized trademarks, 4% of that of Zhejiang Province, 715 internationally registered trademarks, 2% of that of Zhejiang province. Relevant leaders from Yiwu Commerce and Industrial Bureau said though now enterprises in Yiwu have well-know trademarks as intangible assets, but the intellectual property in brand connotation is rare and the added value of intangible products is low. So it is the right time to raise the value and influence of Yiwu's trademarks.
